Exceptional Service Award

 

Background 

This award was established in 2011 by the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) to annually recognize PCMIA Board members who have exercised sustained participation in the PCMIA. Examples of such service includes organizational or committee leadership, volunteer service, and overall participation in PCMIA committees or activities. Nominations may be made for persons involved in any type of service to the PCMIA. The award consists of a commemorative plaque that is presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA which is normally held in late October. 

NOMINATION MATERIALS 

Nominations for this award are restricted to the current or former PCMIA Officers and/or members of the Board of Directors. The award application must be submitted by someone who knows the nominee well and self-nominations will not accepted.  Please submit only one set of nomination materials. It is not necessary to make additional copies. 

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING A NOMINATION FOR THE CURRENT YEAR: Nominations for this award may be submitted at any time to the Awards Committee Chairperson (see below), but must be submitted by September 30, to be considered for the current year award.

CRITERIA ON WHICH AWARD IS GRANTED 

Nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Have been member of the PCMIA Board of Directors for at least ten years.
  • Have not previously received the award.
  • Have exhibited and sustained outstanding service to the PCMIA as delineated below by the "Selection Criteria.” 

Selection Criteria:
Nominees will be evaluated per the following criteria:

  • How much effort beyond the scope of the nominee’s job or training does the nominee give to exceptionally serve the PCMIA?
  • How does the nominee exceed expectations by actively participating, interacting, and collaborating with the Board and committee members and the public to provide exceptional service to the PCMIA?
  • Has the nominee’s service beneficially impacted the PCMIA over an extended period of time?
  • How does the nominee’s exceptional service relate to the expectations of their position on a committee or special project? 

Award Process 

The PCMIA Awards Committee solicits nominations for this award at the beginning of each calendar year. Nominations for this award may be submitted at any time, but must be submitted by September 30th to be considered for the current year award.  Nominations are considered active for three years from the submission date.  

Upon review of all active submissions for the award, the PCMIA Awards Committee will recommend a nominee to the PCMIA Board of Directors for approval. Upon approval, the successful nominee will be notified by early October. The award is presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA which is normally held in late October of each year.It is tradition that the recipient makes a short informal acceptance speech following the receipt of the plaque at the annual PCMIA luncheon.
